I thought it would be fun to collect and store the photos we each have which show how the O'Toole and McCowen family blossomed with us all. Please send me any photos you would like included on this website. I have used software that sharpens them up and if wanted will add colour. If you would like them in their original form let me know. If you have any information about who is who in the pictures please, let me know and I will include it. Also let me know of any corrections I need to make in what I am posting.

I am finding as I add new photos and historical documents there are some inconsistences in relationships. Any help would be welcome as I straighten out the finer details of who's who.

I have added a children's section for identification of our generation if you can. Irene, Valerie and Geraldine sent most of these images
Cecilia gave me this history. I found the house he lived in

This is Michael O'Toole our great grandfather and father of our grandmother Margaret O'Toole.  He was born in Carlow in 1843 and died in 1915. He served in the British army with the 5th Royal Irish Lancers and spent time in India. He was buried in Kilmainham cemetery with full military honours. Cecilea shared these family history letters with me.

Documents that Derry pulled from UK army records for Robert McCowen Is he a brother of Grandpa as he is 4 years older than Joseph?

Second World War operation

 Operation Crusader

The Battle of Sidi Rezegh, part of Operation Crusader in 1941, was a significant yet often overlooked engagement in the North African campaign of World War II, highlighting the bravery and sacrifice of the troops involved.

Historical Context

The Battle of Sidi Rezegh occurred during Operation Crusader, which took place from November 18 to December 30, 1941. This operation aimed to relieve the besieged

fortress of Tobruk and push back the Axis forces led by General Erwin Rommel. The battle was characterized by intense fighting between the British Eighth Army, which

included Commonwealth and Allied troops, and the German-Italian forces.

Key Events and Significance

Initial Engagements: The battle began with a surprise attack by the British Eighth Army, which initially faced significant losses due to poor logistics                           and the tactical superiority of the German forces. The 5th South African Brigade suffered heavy casualties at Sidi Rezegh, but they inflicted considerable damage on

the German tanks.

Tactical Developments: The airfield at Sidi Rezegh became a focal point for both sides. Control of this strategic location was crucial for maintaining supply lines and launching further operations. The battle saw fierce armored clashes, with British and German tanks engaging in brutal combat.

Outcome: Despite the heavy losses, the British forces managed to relieve Tobruk by the end of November 1941. However, the battle came at a high cost, with significant

casualties on both sides. The New Zealand Division, in particular, faced severe losses, marking it as one of the costliest engagements for them during the war.

Legacy

The Battle of Sidi Rezegh is often referred to as a "forgotten battle" of the Desert War, overshadowed by other significant battles such as El Alamein. However, it played a

crucial role in the North African campaign and demonstrated the complexities of modern warfare, including the challenges of logistics, coordination, and the harsh desert

environment.

In summary, the Battle of Sidi Rezegh was a pivotal moment in World War II, showcasing the bravery of the soldiers involved and the strategic importance of the North

African theater. The sacrifices made during this battle are remembered as part of the broader narrative of the war.
